Waste Management and Flood Control
The Oyo State Government, through the Oyo State Nigeria Erosion and Watershed Management Project (OYO NEWMAP), purchased 1,000 trolley bins, 15 tricycles, and an amphibious excavator for the evacuation of waste and flood control in the state. The Commissioner for Environment and Natural Resources, Mr Abiodun Oni, said that the support was possible through the World Bank-assisted project intervention, with counterpart funding from the Oyo State Government as part of many support programmes under NEWMAP. Mr Oni further said that the initiative is meant to manage waste better in the state, prevent gully erosion, and protect the environment for the benefit of the citizens. (July 23, 2022).
Basic Education Certification Examination (BECE)
The Oyo State Government announced the cancellation of the Arabic Language and Creative Art exams in the ongoing Basic Education Certification Examination (BECE) due to technical errors. The Commissioner for Education, Science and Technology, Barr Rahman Abdu-Raheem, made this announcement while monitoring the BECE in five local government areas within Ibadan Metropolis. Barr. Abdu-Raheem also said that the examinations would be rescheduled to a date to be announced. (July 26, 2022).
Sacked Teachers Reinstated
The Oyo State Government reinstated 129 primary school teachers sacked by the previous administration. According to the Executive Chairman of the Oyo State Universal Basic Education Board (OyoSUBEB), Dr Nureni Adeniran, the 129 teachers agreed not to demand arrears payment for the time they were disengaged. The state converted their period of disengagement to a leave of absence. Dr Adeniran also urged teachers in the state to reciprocate Governor Makinde’s gesture by redoubling their commitment to work. Pilgrimage
The second batch of Oyo Pilgrims to Saudi Arabia have returned to Nigeria. The 81 pilgrims arrived in Lagos six days after the arrival of the first batch. The Commissioner for Information, Culture and Tourism, Dr Wasiu Olatubosun, made this known in a press release. He also said an additional two hundred and fifty pilgrims from Oyo State are awaiting an airlift from Saudi Arabia. (July 27, 2022)
Stakeholder Meeting
The Oyo State Ministry of Lands, Housing and Urban Development held a stakeholder meeting to address issues having to do with land use and urban development. Speaking to the press after the meeting, the Commissioner for Lands, Housing and Urban Development, Town-Planner Emmanuel Olusegun Olayiwola, said the authorities would commence serving traders and residents of Ibadan and its environs contravention notices for structures illegally erected on flood plains, blockage of waterways, and buildings under high tension power lines. During the meeting, mandatory tax on building plan approval and development levy fees were reviewed downwards. The three categories of payments are now N50,600, N30,600 and N20,600, respectively. YEAP Beneficiaries Onboarding
The Oyo State Agribusiness Development Agency (OYSADA) onboarded 100 Youth Entrepreneurship in Agribusiness (YEAP) beneficiaries in the crop production enterprise at the Fasola Agribusiness Industrial Hub. These youths were part of the 3,300 youths who received training at CSS Farms, Nasarawa State, last year. The orientation marked the beginning of the project’s second phase for these YEAP beneficiaries. According to the Director General of OYSADA, Dr Debo Akande, the authorities are providing 100 hectares of land at the hub for beneficiaries. The land will be prepared for them, and then they will be provided with all inputs needed to cultivate it. The youths will cultivate and maintain the land while OYSADA provides technical support. Health Insurance
The Oyo State Government has concluded plans to include pensioners in the Oyo State Health Insurance Scheme. Speaking on the Development, the Executive Secretary of the Oyo State Health Insurance Agency (OYSHIA), Dr Sola Akande, said the health insurance scheme for pensioners will be subsidised and rolled out at N4,000 per head/per annum for pensioners earning N5,000 and above per month while those earning below N5,000 would be enrolled into the scheme for free as direct beneficiaries of the Basic Health Care Provision Fund (BHCPF) at no charge. Feeder Roads and Waste Management in Oyo State
The Oyo State Government will begin the rehabilitation of feeder roads and improve waste management in the state. Governor Seyi Makinde stated this in his newsletter of July 28, 2022. According to His Excellency, the state has secured funding of 3.5 million Euros under the World Bank-Assisted Rural Access and Agricultural Marketing Project (RAAMP). Governor Makinde also read the riot act to Private Sector Participants (PSPs) that have continued to operate illegally in the state. He said the authorities are set to clamp down on illegal PSP operators in the state. (July 28, 2022)
Open Defecation Free Roadmap Unveiled
The Oyo State Government unveiled a plan -Open Defecation Free Roadmap – which will be implemented to end open defecation in the state by 2028. Speaking during a media chat in Ibadan, the Chairman, Oyo State Rural Water Supply and Sanitation Agency (RUWASSA), Engr. Najeem Omirinde, said the roadmap is to serve as a template and guide to help the people understand the negative implications of open defecation and why it must be put to an end in the state. Also speaking, the Chief of Water, Sanitation and Hygiene (WASH), UNICEF, Nigeria, Jane Bevan, said that UNICEF would support and partner with Oyo State to be open defecation free to improve sanitation and save lives. Oyo State Government is set to train 200 youths in tech skills
The Oyo State Government, in collaboration with Coven Works, will empower and train 200 youths in high-demand cyber technology skills. Engr Seun Fakorede, the Commissioner for Youth and Sports, made the announcement during a press conference in his office in Ibadan. According to Engr Fakorede, Coven Works is a leading tech education provider in Africa, with students from all over the world majoring in data science and artificial intelligence. He urged Oyo State youths to enrol in the training before the application deadline of Sunday, July 31, 2022. Interested individuals should visit https://bitly/cw-OYSG for registration. The Amotekun, Oyo State command announces the screening dates and venue for all 2022/2023 applicants in all zones of the state.
The Oyo State Western Nigeria Security Network (WNSN), Amotekun Corps, announced the screening dates and venue for 2022/2023 applicants in all zones of the state. All candidates are to come along with their credentials, as they will be needed during the exercise.
