LG Elections Date Announced
The Oyo State Independent Electoral Commission (OYSIEC) has fixed May 15, 2021, for local government elections in the state’s 33 local government areas. The Chairman of OYSIEC, Aare Isiaka Olagunju SAN, said the commission will serve as an unbiased umpire to ensure free and fair elections. According to the schedule, campaigns opened on February 17,2021 and would close by May 14, 2021. (February 15, 2021)
State-Wide Broadcast
Governor Seyi Makinde addressed the state on security and the ethnic crisis at Sasa-Ojoo in a state-wide broadcast. He emphasised the importance of peaceful coexistence among residents and promised to investigate the Sasa Market crisis’s immediate cause. He also pledged to set up Peace and Security Committees in all zones of the state as a lasting solution to internal security challenges. (February 15, 2021)
Northern Governors’ Solidarity Visit
Governor Seyi Makinde received Governors Umar Ganduje, Bello Matawalle, Abubakar Bagudu, and Abubakar Sani Bello. They were on a fact-finding and solidarity visit to Oyo State following the Sasa market crisis. During their stay, they joined Governor Makinde on a visit to Sasa market and its environs. They also paid visits to the palaces of the Seriki Sasa and the Baale of Sasa. (February 15, 2021)
Conditions for Sasa Market Reopening Set.
Governor Seyi Makinde has said Sasa market would be reopened after traders in the market come together, sort out their differences and agree to coexist peacefully. He spoke while on a second assessment visit to the market after the crisis in the company of Governors Umar Ganduje, Bello Matawalle, Abubakar Bagudu, and Abubakar Sani Bello. Governor Makinde insisted that the market would remain closed to all business activities until this condition was met. (February 16, 2021)
OYOSUBEB Board Member Appointed
The Oyo State Government approved Mr Oladimeji Raji’s appointment as a member of the Oyo State Universal Basic Education Board. Before his appointment, Mr Raji had served in the Oyo State Teaching Service Commission for 30 years and is the current Treasurer of the Nigeria Union of Teachers (NUT). (February 17, 2021)
Special Needs Equipment Distributed
The Oyo State Government has distributed educational equipment to 21 public special primary schools and 12 public special secondary schools in the state. Some of the items distributed were crutches, wheelchairs, Perkins Braille manual typewriters, hearing aids, Index Everest braille embossers, educative toys, universal braille kits, talking calculators, First Aid boxes, mattresses and VCDs amongst many others. Teachers’ Training Commenced
The Oyo State Universal Basic Education Board, in partnership with the Universal Basic Education Commission (UBEC), commenced the training of language teachers and non-formal education centre facilitators in 21 local government areas of the state. The exercise is part of activities under the World Bank assisted Better Education Service Delivery for All (BESDA) programme. The training will upskill the teachers on lesson planning and delivery.
