Completed Phase 1 of the Oyo State 11 MW Hybrid Independent Power Project (IPP).

An update and pictures of the now completed development of Phase 1 of the 11 MW hybrid power solution Independent Power Project (IPP), Oyo State Secretariat, Agodi, Ibadan. The Independent Power Project is a public-private partnership between the Oyo State Government and Elektron Energy. Phase 1 of this project which is 5 MW is now completed and will go live before the end of 2024. Phase 2 (6 MW) will commence immediately afterwards.

The 11 MW Independent Power Project, which comprises a 10 MW gas-fired power generation and a 1 MW PV solar solution, will be supplied by the ongoing Shell Gas Pipeline project. The IPP will serve as the main power source for the tribrid power system of the Light Up Oyo project. The IPP will also serve the energy needs of various infrastructural facilities in Oyo State such as:

– The Lekan Salami Sports Complex, Adamasingba.

– 12 healthcare facilities, including Adeoyo Maternity Teaching Hospital and State Hospital Ring Road.

– About a 10 km radius of public lighting under the ‘Light-Up Oyo’ project.

– The judicial complexes at Iyaganku and Ring Road.

– The Oyo State Secretariat and the House of Assembly, and

– A selection of schools within a defined catchment from the generation plant at the Oyo State Secretariat.

Governor Seyi Makinde outlined these in his speech here.

The Oyo State IPP is a key initiative by the Oyo State Government to address and fulfil the energy needs of the State. Additional strategies aimed at achieving energy sufficiency in Oyo State include installing solar-hybrid mini-grids in rural communities and the Oyo State-Shell Nigeria Gas project. The Oyo State Electricity Regulatory Commission Law also creates a regulatory commission that will be in charge of the generation, distribution, and transmission of electricity in Oyo State, a responsibility which hitherto, was the Federal Government’s. Other steps taken by the OYSG towards ensuring improved electricity supply include policies and seeking investors into the energy sector.
