This is a report of the second public hearing of the Oyo State Judicial Panel of Inquiry into Police Brutality, Violation of Rights of Citizens and Unlawful Killings in Oyo State.

Today’s public sitting kicked off at exactly 9:13am shortly after the arrival of the panelists. The Chairperson of the Oyo State Judicial Panel, Hon. Justice Badejoko Adeniji, declared the public sitting open and the proceedings began in earnest.
Cases at the Oyo State Judicial Panel
1. Case No. OYJPPB/011
Ife Olamiju (Esq.) v Nigeria Police Force. The petitioner was present and represented by I. A. Etta. The respondent was represented by CSP Funke Fawole and Barr. O. J. Matthew. According to the Officer in Charge Legal, the respondent had not been served with the processes.
The Oyo State Judicial Panel decided that the respondent be served afresh with all the necessary processes and the case was adjourned till February 16, 2021 for mention.
2. Case No. OYJPPB/012
Muhammad Sadisu v Commissioner of Police, Ogun State. The petitioner was absent but Barr. Funke Fawole held the brief for the Commissioner of Police, Ogun State.
The case was adjourned by the Oyo State Judicial Panel till February 16, 2021 for mention, and the provision of proof of service of processes on the respondent in Ogun State with a copy served to the Officer in Charge, Legal in Oyo State.
3. Case No. OYJPPB/013
Bello Olusegun Kayode v Nigeria Police, Sango Police Command. The petitioner was present for the case mention but the respondent who was represented by Barr. Funke Fawole stated that the processes had not been served before now.
The Oyo State Judicial Panel decided that relevant documents should be served on the police and the petition was adjourned till February 16, 2021 for mention.
4. Case No. OYJPPB/014
Sulaimon Kehinde v The Area Commander, Nigeria Police, Ogbomoso. The petitioner was absent but he was represented by L. L. Akanbi. The Oyo State Judicial Panel decided that the police should be served with the processes.
With the approval of both parties, the petition was adjourned by the Oyo State Judicial Panel till February 16, 2021 for mention. Also, all the filled processes are to be served on the legal representative of the police immediately after the panel sitting.
5. Case No. OYJPPB/015
Kamaldeen Hassan v The Area Commander, Nigeria Police, Ogbomoso. The petitioner was absent but represented by L. L. Akanbi.
The Oyo State Judicial Panel decided that the legal representative of the police is to be served with another copy of the petition and the case was adjourned till February 16, 2021 for mention.
6. Case No. OYJPPB/016
Hon Ojo Samson Bamidele v Commissioner of Police, Oyo State. The petitioner was present and Barr. Funke Fawole appeared as the representative of the respondent.
The Oyo State Judicial Panel decided that the relevant papers would be served on the Commissioner of Police and the case was adjourned till February 16, 2021.
7. Case No. OYJPPB/017
The family of Late Abass Lawal Adekoya v Commissioner of Police, Oyo State. Halima Lawal and Olumide Ojedokun (legal counsel) appeared on behalf of the family. Barr. Funke Fawole appeared on behalf of the respondent.
The Oyo State Judicial Panel decided that the processes should be served afresh on the respondents and the petition was adjourned till February 16, 2021 for mention.
8. Case No. OYJPPB/018
The family of Late Mrs Sakirat Olaegbe v Commissioner of Police, Oyo State. Olaegbe Awwanat and Olumide Ojedokun (legal counsel) appeared on behalf of the family while Barr. Funke Fawole appeared on behalf of the respondent.
The petition was adjourned by the Oyo State Judicial Panel till February 16, 2021 for mention to enable the respondent be served the relevant processes.
9. Case No. OYJPPB/019
Mr Sesan Opadotun’s Family v Commissioner of Police, Oyo State. The petitioner was present and Barr. Funke Fawole appeared on behalf of the respondent.
The petition was adjourned by the Oyo State Judicial Panel till February 16, 2021 for mention.
10. Case No. OYJPPB/020
Mr Akinlabi Moruf v Commissioner of Police, Oyo State. The petitioner was present and was also represented by Olumide Ojedokun while Barr. Funke Fawole represented the police.
The petition was adjourned by the Oyo State Judicial Panel till February 16, 2021 for mention.
Having examined the cases brought before the Oyo State Judicial Panel today, Hon. Justice Adeniji stated for the purpose of clarity, that the terms of reference of the judicial sitting is strictly police brutalisation and extra judicial killings. With this, the panel sitting was adjourned till tomorrow, Thursday, January 28, 2021.
