Who is handling the junction improvements project?

The junction improvements contract is awarded to Messrs Planet Projects Ltd.

What is the duration of the contract?

The contract duration is nine months.

What is the total cost of the junction improvements?

Is it true that the junction improvement works are just for installing traffic lights?

It is incorrect to say that the junction improvement works are just for installing traffic lights. A similar project has been carried out at Challenge and Felele Junctions, and the improvement involved:

  • Demolition works
  • Alignment and reconfiguration of road geometry
  • Road architecture, kerbs, lane demarcation
  • Traffic signals
  • Traffic signs
  • Wire mesh to cordon-off areas
  • Road/lane markings
  • Pedestrian walkway
  • Drainage
  • Landscaping/horticulture and
  • Building a Motor Park

What improvements will be made at the Agodi Gate, Idi Ape Civic Centre, and University of Ibadan Junctions?

The improvement works at Agodi Gate, Idi Ape Civic Centre, and University of Ibadan Junctions will include more work than at Challenge and Felele Junctions at relatively similar costs. The work will include the following:

  • Demolition works
  • Alignment and reconfiguration
  • Road architecture, kerbs, lane demarcation
  • Traffic signals
  • Traffic signs
  • Wire mesh to cordon-off areas
  • Road/lane markings
  • Pedestrian walkway
  • Drainage
  • Landscaping/Horticulture

While there will be no Motor Parks at these junctions, they will include

  • Lay-bys for taxis and motorcycles

The work will feature nine (9) junctions and 69 lane interactions.

What is the difference between Phase 1 junction improvements at Challenge and Felele Junctions and Phase 2 junction improvements at Agodi Gate, Idi Ape Civic Centre, and University of Ibadan Junctions?

The major differences between Phase 1 junction improvements at Challenge and Felele Junctions and Phase 2 improvements at Agodi Gate, Idi Ape Civic Centre, and the University of Ibadan Junctions is the number of junctions and lane interactions. While Challenge and Felele have two junctions and 24 lane interactions, Agodi Gate, Idi Ape Civic Centre, and University of Ibadan Junctions have nine (9) junctions and 69 lane interactions. Also, Agodi Gate, Idi Ape Civic Centre, and the University of Ibadan Junctions will have bus shelters and lay-bys for taxis and motorcycles.

How will this junction improvement project improve the quality of life of citizens in these areas?

As the population in the city of Ibadan continues to increase, there will be more pressure on infrastructure, including roads. Improvement works ensure a reduction in time spent at these junctions, which saves man-hours in travel time and leads to a higher quality of life.

Could the money earmarked for the junction improvement be used for some other projects that would have been more beneficial to the people of Oyo State?

The economic impact of road construction and improvements are significant as they have a multiplier effect of creating wealth that can easily be applied to other projects. A recent survey of expectations of the people of Oyo State shows that the economy remains top of mind. A responsive government will place the needs of the people as a priority, and that is what the present administration led by Governor Seyi Makinde is doing.
